A motorcycle may be smaller and lighter when compared to cars but when it comes to shipping, it has its own challenges. Riding the bike to the destination may seem like a good and cheap option but it has many risks. First of all, you will be all alone in a lonely stretch of road with no one to help you if your bike breaks down. The nearest workshop may be miles away and you might be stranded for hours together before your help arrives. Secondly, it is not safe to ride a bike alone for several days at a shot.
Securing a Bike in a Van
For those of you who love to ride a bike, the idea of packing it in a van might seem ludicrous but it definitely has its advantages.
- Your bike is an expensive toy and you will be saving on wear and tear when you transport it via a van. You can ride the bike for pleasure when you have safely settled in your new destination.
- Even if there is a breakdown, you can be sure that the motorcycle transporters will have all the equipment at hand to start repairing. Also most companies have good on-road support and they can get the van going in no time at all.
- You can safely take a plane and be in your new home to welcome your bike.
- In case you have bought the bike from an online merchant, then it is better to get it transported by a van as you do not want to have any damages even before you lay eyes on it.
The vans that auto transport companies use will have specially designed interiors with straps to hold down the bike securely. Experienced movers will also secure the bike by keeping its break on by special methods so that it does not move after securing. They might also use crates that are designed for motorcycle transportation which again might come with wheel stoppers and straps. Also check whether the company uses standard straps and not just ropes as they might loosen during the transportation.
Why Not Use a Trailer
Most of the time, auto transport companies will advise you to use a van rather than a trailer as it is safer and faster. Trailers are not allowed to go fast on highways and they restricted from going in lane three also. Also they come with a speed limit which is not the case when you use a van. So if you want an easy and fast move, choose a van.
Using Ramps or Manpower
If you have ramps to load the bike, then it will make your work much easier. However, when there is no ramp, a bike can be easily loaded into the van with the help of two people. A bike is not all that heavy and the job can be done by 2-3 people without any fuss. Of course, when there is a ramp a single person can easily load the bike by riding into the van. If you are concerned you can always ask the transport company about their loading methods.
